Our Middle School comprises those students and staff involved in the pastoral care and curriculum programs of Years 7, 8 & 9. The curriculum offerings also have special significance for Year 10, part of the Senior School structure, but still are embraced by the philosophy of Middle Schooling.
These years see some of the greatest changes in students as they develop from young children to adolescents. This can be a time of turbulence as students display:
-
rapid physical growth;
-
a mixture of sophistication and naivety;
-
a desire for independence countered by a need for security;
-
strong identification with their peer group;
-
a new dimension to their thinking;
-
brashness and an occasional lack of tact in their dealings with adults; and
-
emotional ups and downs.
Effective curriculum design and delivery must do a number of things: build upon students' existing education base; accommodate their current stage of development; and provide the necessary tools for success in meeting the broad challenges of the future.
The Middle School curriculum at West Moreton Anglican College embraces the College credo of Faith, Knowledge and Service. It also places an emphasis on meeting the needs of our students by:
-
catering for the transition from childhood to adolescence encompassing the spiritual, physical, social and psychological dimensions;
-
providing a sense of stability and continuity by focusing on the links between primary and secondary education;
-
organising the timetable so that greater contact is established with a small group of teachers;
-
organising the curriculum on the basis of perceived needs of the age group and allowing for the range of intellectual abilities involved;
-
teaching strategies and classroom management based on the physical, social psychological and spiritual needs of the students; and
-
acknowledging the need for parents and the wider community to be actively involved in the education of our adolescents.
The curriculum aims to enable all students to pursue individual excellence, a concept that extends beyond the classroom into all facets of College life.
