Year 9 & 10 English

The Nature of English

‘English’ is no longer ink on paper.  Students will be challenged by a language which is written, spoken, read and heard; a language which is alive and powerful.  The language of television news reports and political speeches is at heart the same as that shared between friends in the school playground.  However, it is the subtleties involved in manipulating this language to serve a certain purpose which makes it more exciting than “that old poem” or a mere television commercial.  How will you, the student, be able to use your language when you have completed the Year 9 and 10 English course?

The Value of Studying English

By taking students beyond playground conversations and nightly television, Year 9 and 10 English will develop each student’s confidence and enjoyment in using their language more widely.  This confidence and enjoyment will develop as students create their own texts for a range of personal and social purposes.  They will also improve their ability to interpret and analyse the texts of others.  Those who can effectively manipulate their language to suit a variety of situations, and who can appreciate the ability of others to deliberately construct language for their own effect or benefit, are more empowered than those who operate at the level of “it’s just words”.
