West Moreton Anglican College wins Champion TAS Cricket School for sixth consecutive year and Firsts Football Girls team win TAS premiership
West Moreton Anglican College has become the first school to win a record six consecutive TAS Champion Cricket School titles, cementing the College’s legacy as one of the region’s leading cricket schools.
There was double celebration with the unbeaten Firsts Girls Football team winning the TAS premiership following a thrilling 2-all draw.
WestMAC’s Head of Sport Rob Hillier said three of the College’s five cricket teams progressed to their respective grand finals with the Intermediate Seconds sealing a premiership.
“To have three of WestMAC’s five teams go through to grand finals is a sign of our depth, as well as our renowned WestMAC spirit of participation and teamwork,’’ Mr Hillier said.
“It is rewarding to see that our approach of giving students access to high-level training and specialist coaching, from junior years and onwards, has paid dividends with students achieving individual and team excellence.’’
Principal Geoff McLay praised the commitment and enthusiasm shown by WestMAC coaches and students over the past six years in establishing such an impressive cricketing reputation.
“At WestMAC we focus on developing players’ basic skills and a strong team culture by providing specialist and skilled coaches. This strong WestMAC culture of support and team work has been evident throughout the past six years.’’
Meanwhile WestMAC dominated the first half of the Firsts football grand final with Charlotte Lax and Evie Schultz scoring to give WestMAC a 2-0 halftime advantage against John Paul College (JPC).
JPC fought back in the second half to equalise with both teams enjoying scoring opportunities in the fast-flowing thriller with WestMAC, who showed their defensive strengths.
Mr Hillier said WestMAC had a strong Football program offering programs, pathways and opportunities to players to promote team spirit and individual skills.
“Our students receive access to specialised coaching sessions from internal and external staff,’’ Mr Hillier said. “Every WestMAC student receives an opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge.
“In football we have a link with local club Western Pride, with expert club coaches helping to mentor our Senior players to soar to new heights resulting in the feat of securing a premiership with the Firsts team.
“Players receive support of coaches and the Sports department which helps with the little one-percenters such as having a gym to work out in before matches, and a beautiful field to train on, which made a difference to team preparation and performance.’’
WestMAC is renowned for Football excellence including with the girls program which has a strong team culture and expert coaches. The College has claimed two of the five premierships since Girls Football was introduced to the TAS (The Associated Schools) competition schedule in 2019.
“The Firsts team demonstrated the College focus of commitment to team unity, working for each other and showing passion and tenacity to produce a high standard of play during the pressure of a final,’’ Mr Hillier said.
In other premiership news the undefeated Year 7 Girls Basketball team won a TAS Title with a commanding 40-20 victory over Cannon Hill Anglican College (CHAC).
A special mention to grand finalists: Senior Firsts Cricket, Intermediate Girls Football, Intermediate Thirds Cricket, and the Year 7/8 Navy Volleyball teams.
“Overall, we aim to ensure students not only learn sports skills but also have fun,’’ Mr Hillier said.
