West Moreton Anglican College secured three premierships on their way to being crowned Champion TAS hockey school for the fifth consecutive year.

WestMAC dominated the TAS Championship ladder finishing with premierships for the Year 8s, Year 9s and Firsts, with the latter two sides undefeated during the term-long competition.

WestMAC Principal Mr Geoff McLay praised the dedication of the College’s players and knowledgeable coaching staff for this season’s record-breaking success.

“Having all five teams in grand finals and to continue this Champion hockey school legacy is an outstanding achievement for the College,’’ Mr McLay said. “The commitment of every student and the College’s expert coaches to the hockey program is inspiring.

“We focus on developing players’ basic skills and a strong team culture, as well as providing specialist and dedicated coaches. WestMAC is the College to join if you love your hockey and you want to develop your game to the next level.’’

WestMAC achieved a clean sweep of grand final finishes, with all five hockey teams making the premiership play-offs: the Firsts, Seconds, Year 9s, Year 8s and Year 7s.

This is only the second time in TAS (The Associated Schools) history that a grand final clean sweep has been achieved in one sport by a school. WestMAC is the only school to have achieved this feat, after also claiming a grand final clean sweep in hockey, in 2019.

The Firsts team, coached by Ipswich representative Vanessa Kissane, reclaimed the prestigious Firsts crown with a convincing 2-0 win over Ormiston College after dominating through a strong midfield.

Director of Hockey Mr Neil Shearer, who mentored 2004 Olympic gold medalists Jamie Dwyer and Mark Knowles, said the College had been developing skills from primary school, especially with Brisbane hosting the Olympics in 2032.

“We have been working on developing skills of players in primary school and we are seeing the success of this strategy,’’ Mr Shearer said. “It’s important that students receive skilled coaching from a young age which is what WestMAC offers.’’

The undefeated Year 9 side drew 0-0 with Ormiston College in the grand final and claimed the premiership with a superior ladder position.

“The Year 8 team showed courage to turn the tables on their opponents and regular fixture victors John Paul College by dominating the grand final 5-0.

A strong and exciting Term 3 is expected, with the upcoming TAS and JTAS Athletics Carnivals, as well as the Boys’ Football and Basketball, and Girls’ Volleyball and Touch Football competitions.
